He requested Singh to consider granting a 'special package’ covering several projects, "above the usual plan allocation." Noting that Meghalaya is one of the few states in the country that does not have any medical college, Sangma urged the PM for setting up one.
"Meghalaya does not have a medical college and has been grappling with shortage of medical personnel. This has adversely affected provision of health care to people. We seek to remedy this situation by setting up a government medical college in the Garo Hills region at Tura," Sangma told the PM. At current costs, a government medical college-cum-hospital would cost about Rs 250 crore, the CM informed the PM.
The CM also sought an equal amount for building up of a new assembly structure in Shillong. "Meghalaya lost its assembly building, a heritage site, to a fire in 2001. Since then we have been making serious endeavour to construct a new building for which land has been identified," Sangma said.
Pointing out that Shillong is a well known hill station and traditional centre of excellence in education, Sangma, in his memorandum, said that given the paucity of land, the state had encouraged a 'New Shillong Township', which needs 'funding support' of about Rs 400 crore.
The CM further sought 'help' to the tune of Rs 320 crore from the Centre for a large number of development projects covering water supply, roads, power and sports infrastructure in the state.
