Enrolment drive in Meghalaya

Shillong, Sept. 12 : Over 4,000 out-of-school children are expected to be enrolled across Meghalaya on World Literacy Day this Friday.

This year, the State Education Mission Authority of Meghalaya (SEMAM-SSA) will observe the day by organising a mass school enrolment drive for out-of-school children in the state.

The main objective of the programme is to mobilise out-of-school children, dropouts and never-enrolled children to be admitted to regular schools and special training centres, as mandated by the RTE Act.

The enrolment will be held in all district headquarters and the state capital, where more than 4,000 children are expected to enrol.

As mandated under the RTE Act, the state education department has taken up school mapping exercises on Geographic Information System (GIS) platforms, in order to demarcate neighbourhood schools and identify different types of schools located in the area, an official communiqué said.

The GIS application will be hosted in NIC, Andhra Pradesh till NIC, Meghalaya acquires its own GIS server. It will be accessible on the public domain after the GIS application is launched in schools on Friday.
