Taditional clans oppose mobile towers at Shillong Peak

Shillong, June 15 (PTI) The traditional heads of 12 clans in Meghalaya have asked mobile companies to remove their towers from the Shillong Peak, claiming the towers were affecting the environment and sanctity of the place, considered holy by local Hynniewtrep tribe. The Shillong Peak, a popular tourist destination from where entire capital city can be seen, is located at an altitude of 1966 metres above sea level. Representatives of traditional heads of the twelve clans of Raij Mylliem led by Myntri (minister) of Hima Mylliem (traditional Khasi kingdom), Charles Marbaniang said that there are five mobile towers on the slopes of Shillong Peak. "The peak is held with veneration since time immemorial by the tribal Hynniewtrep community of Meghalaya. The peak is also a perennial source of nine rivers and streams that feed the population of Shillong and if the towers are allowed to be erected there, all the water sources would dry up and have an adverse impact on human lives, Marbaniang said. He said the area is believed to be a dwelling place of spiritual guardians and God the Creator known as U Lei Shyllong, where goat sacrifice is held at the dawn of Spring every year. "By erecting these towers in the peak, the companies have shown disrespect to the beliefs and tradition of the indigenous communities in Meghalaya," he said.
