Meghalaya to have its own HC next year

14.6.2011 (UNI) Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Bindo M Lanong has said that the state will have its own High Court by next year.

Mr Lanong, who also holds the law portfolio, said that Union Law and Justice Minister Veerappa Moily has assured help in setting up a separate high court for the state.

The high court at present is functioning under the Shillong bench of Gauhati High Court.

'The Government of India is in the process of amending the North East Area Reorganisation Act which is necessary for creation of a separate high court in every state of the Northeast,' Mr Lanong told reporters here yesterday.

Under the article 214 of the constitution, every state is required to have an independent high court that would help to expedite disposal of cases at the shortest time, Mr Lanong said.

Mr Lanong also said that at present the state government needs the approval of the Gauhati High Court even to appoint a judicial officer.
