Taxi owners association strike in Shillong

Shillong, May 18 (PTI) Meghalaya government today persuaded one taxi owners association but another union was determined to go for a two-day strike from tomorrow demanding hike in the fares following the rise in petrol prices."The proposed strike called by East Khasi Hills Taxi Owners and Drivers Association starting tomorrow will not affect the commuters in the city," Transport Minister A T Mondal said.He maintained that one group would be on strike but Shillong Region Taxi Owners Drivers Association (SRTODA) will ply their taxis in the city which they have confirmed after a meeting convened today with the Deputy Commissioner.Mondal said, "The bigger group has confirmed that they will not go on strike, so the commuters will not be affected." The government, he said, would also ply buses for the conveyance of the public.Commenting on the recent hike of petrol price and the demand from the taxi association to hike taxi fare, Mondal said, "The fare hike should be linked to the service provided by the taxis." "The demand is long pending and we have even called for discussion and public hearing where several complaints have surfaced against the taxi drivers. We will take a call to notify the rise in hike of fare soon," he said. The minister also warned that if any taxi driver charged more before the government notifies any hike, it would be deemed to be illegal and action would be taken.
