KSU submits memorandum on exorbitant fee

Shillong, May 18 (PTI) The influential Khasi Students Union today sought Education Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh's intervention into the exorbitant increase in the fee structure of students by some educational institutions, especially private ones in Meghalaya, saying it was irrational, unreasonable and unjustified."This increase in the fee structure has irked the parents and student community at large. The insensitivity of the school authorities to understand the plight of the students and the parents has raised a lot of doubts about the intention in which the schools have been set up," KSU said in a memorandum to the minister. The exorbitant fee structure has affected the students coming from low income groups, it said. The KSU also was worried at the frequent change of syllabus for the different levels that has created confusion and disorientation to the students community, and has affected smooth transition of knowledge. The student body also came down on schools for making their own arrangement for the purchase of textbooks and uniform from selected retailers. This has led to monopoly by some to suit interest of some schools to earn commission, it said. The KSU also urged the education minister to look into the delay in disbursement of pre and post matric scholarship which was causing injustice to the students.
