"The cow elephant, around 18 years old and five months into her breeding period, was electrocuted May 23 in the Garo Hills Elephant Reserve," Range Forest Officer of Balpakram National Park (BNP), C.G. Momin said.
BNP is located in the western region of Meghalayas South Garo Hill district.
Momin said an FIR has been filed at Nangalbibra police station against the sub-divisional officer of the Meghalaya Electricity Corporation Limited, Baghmara, for the negligence which caused the death of the elephant.
Experts said wild elephants have been moving out of the jungles as people have encroached upon animal corridors, leading to an increasing number of elephant attacks on villages.
Assam and Meghalaya have Indias largest number of Asiatic elephants, estimated at about 7,500, according to a wildlife census in 2002.
