The NEHU staff, under the banner of Joint Action Committee (JAC), said the road, commonly known as McDonald Road, was constructed three years ago from NEHU campus at Mswkynroh in Shillong but it is in deplorable condition even without being used for a single day.
The major portion of the black topping of the road has been washed away and the side walls of the road collapsed as no qualified architect was engaged while the road was constructed, the JAC alleged.
The JAC said the two bridges on the road were so bad that its supporting walls collapsed within a year of completion, JAC said.
The JAC further said the road and the bridges were constructed at the cost of Rs eight crore but after knowing the condition of the road and bridges it seems the fund for the purpose was misutilised.
''How and who gave the completion certificate for the work? Being head of the institution, the Vice-Chancellor is directly responsible for this mismanagement,'' the JAC questioned.
''What is surprising is the planned repair work of the road and bridges at the cost of about Rs 60 lakh for the collapsed portion of the road that was not opened for a single day for public traffic,'' the JAC pointed out.
Further, it was also alleged that another about Rs 30 lakh has been wasted in the name of construction of a small lake near the gate of the NEHU campus, but such thing never happened, the JAC added.
