Teacher quits after threat

Resignation sent in response to road blockade call
Shillong, Mar 1 : A lecturer appointed by the education department in St Anthony’s College here has resigned following protests over appointment of “outside” lecturers by three prominent NGOs.
The Khasi Students Union, the Federation of Khasi Jaintia Garo People and the Synjuk Ki Seng Samla Shnong had last night called road blockade from 7pm to 5am on Monday and Tuesday in protest against the appointment of two “outside” lecturers in city colleges by the state education department in violation of the state reservation policy.
One of the lecturers, Oinam Singh, who is undergoing treatment at the RIMS in Imphal, faxed his resignation letter to the principal of St Anthony’s College, Father Ioanis Warpakma, last night saying he did not want to be the cause of law and order problem in Shillong.
Father Warpakma said when the post of lecturer in the chemistry department of the college was advertised in 2005, there were no local candidates who qualified for the post and hence Oinam’s appointment was not in violation to the state reservation policy. He said the college always followed the state reservation policy while appointing lecturers and expressed concern over not receiving any application from local candidates for teaching music though the college had advertised for the post thrice.
The department had also appointed Ratna Deep Roy in St Edmund’s College.
Following the NGOs’ road blockade call, the East Khasi Hills district administration today decided to deploy police forces on the highways here. East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner B. Dhar today said Section 144 CrPC would be imposed for those two days to ensure peace.
