Orders to eliminate killer elephant in Meghalaya

Shillong , Mar 9 : Meghalaya Forest Department has issued an order to eliminate an elephant that recently killed four persons in West Garo Hills, declaring the animal as"a habitual human killer".

A team of forest officials and police personnel are already in Selsella area to kill the wild pachyderm and prevent further loss of life and property, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Fredrick Roy Kharkongor said.

Authorities declared the wild pachyderm as"rogue"after it deserted a disciplined group of elephants that usually do not pose any danger to human life and property.

Usually elephants never kill or attack people, but as per law, any wild pachyderm that frequently attacks and kills human beings has to be declared a"habitual killer", Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) V K Nautiyal said.
