Meghalaya seeks 33 companies for poll security

Shillong, Mar 9 : Meghalaya Government has asked the Centre for 33 additional companies of paramilitary forces for smooth conduct of the Lok Sabha elections in the state on April 16.

The state government made the proposal to Deputy Election Commissioner Alok Shukla who arrived here yesterday to assess Meghalaya's preparedness to go to general elections.

Shukla discussed poll-related issues, including security measures, with deputy commissioners and superintendents of police and officials of the state Election Department, official sources said.

"We have asked the Election Commission to sanction 33 additional companies of central paramilitary forces for smooth conduct of the elections in the State," State's Chief Electoral Officer Prashant Naik said.

He pointed out that a greater number of security personnel would have to be deployed in hypersensitive and sensitive polling stations and also in Garo Hills region to check movement of militants during the polls.

"The state has also been asked to work in coordination with Assam. Both the states will prepare a complete list of polling stations falling under Assam- Meghalaya border," Naik said.
