Cong will form govt in Meghalaya if situation arises: Lapang

Shillong , Mar 13 In the wake of two Independent MLAs withdrawing support to the Meghalaya Progressive Alliance (MPA) government, Opposition leader D D Lapang today said Congress will not topple the NCP-led coalition and will think of forming a government only if need arose.

"We do not intend to topple the government. But if a situation arises when the MPA collapses, we cannot remain mute spectators," Lapang told PTI after a two-hour CLP meeting following the resignation of the two Independents Limison Sangma and Ismail R Marak.

Dissatisfied after not getting ministerial berths, the two MLAs withdrew their support to the MPA, reducing the government to a wafer-thin majority with 31 members in a House of 60 seats.

Lapang also hinted that the two MLAs were in the Congress camp saying,"If they are not on that side its obvious. Its a circumstantial evidence."

Blaming MPA for failing to manage coalition partners, Lapang said more would leave the ruling alliance soon.

"We are not trying to come back to power, but they (MPA) are giving us the power,"Lapang, who now needs just one MLA to topple the government, said.

Meanwhile, the MPA partners convened a meeting this evening where all the constituent MLAs reaffirmed their support in writing.

"All members of the MPA are intact," Chief Minister Donkupar Roy claimed.
