Cong to review results in Shillong today

SHILLONG, May 19 – The State Congress in Meghalaya would be holding a meeting on Monday to review the Parliamentary election results, especially the Tura seat it lost in Garo Hills.

Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) working president Deborah Marak said that the party would sit down together and try to find the reason for its election defeat in the Tura seat.

In fact, Marak herself canvassed extensively in Garo Hills together with the Chief Minister Mukul Sangma in Tura for party candidate Daryl CH Momin who lost to Purno Sangma of National People’s Party by close to 40,000 votes.

The party said that it was expecting victory of its candidate and the result came somewhat as a big disappointment. The meeting will try to find the reason why Momin lost eventually.

The Congress, however, was able to retain the Shillong seat, which has remained with the party for several years now. Vincent Pala, the sitting Congress MP was able to come through withstanding a stiff competition from his poll rivals and bickerings within his party.

MPCC president DD Lapang said that the party has accepted the mandate of the people and added that the result has to go one way or the other.

He nonetheless said that the party was disappointed on the overall result of the party throughout the country. “There is a sense of disappointment, but in an election someone has to win and the other has to lose,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Congress Working Committee would be holding its meeting in New Delhi tomorrow. Meghalaya Chief Minister will attend the meeting.
