Six convicted for gang-rape in Meghalaya

A fast track court in Meghalaya today convicted six men involved in the gang-rape of a teenaged girl by 16 persons in the East Garo Hills in December last year.

The Tura fast track court convicted Laston Marak, Tobath Marak, Platon C Marak, Chengchow D Sangma, Kisen N Marak and Chingkam Ch Marak in the case.

The quantum of sentence would be announced at a later date.

Ten others, who were minors, are being proceeded against by the Juvenile Justice Board.

"The conviction should be a deterrent to crimes against women in the future. It is a big win for us," Public Prosecutor P L Sebastian said.

The 17-year-old girl was knocked senseless with a brick when she was returning from a fashion show during the Winter Festival on the evening of December 16, 2012 and was gang-raped by the 6 men and 10 minors.

Jaynie Sangma, an NGO member who helped in the rehabilitation of the victim said she was very happy with the conviction and hoped the court would award maximum punishment.
