Shillong fair ushers in Christmas spirit

SHILLONG: Dazzling Christmas trees, sparkling stars, two-wheelers as gifts and mouth-watering food is ushering in Xmas at the 8th International Shillong Shopping Carnival at Madan Iew Rynghep (Fire brigade Ground), Laitumkhrah.

Apart from Thailand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Nepal, South Africa is participating for the first time at a fair in Meghalaya.

The brother sister duo of Lyton Sicelo Moyo and Helen Dineo Supine, who have come from Johannesburg, is spellbound by the beauty of Shillong. "This is our first visit to Meghalaya and we are awestruck by the beauty and weather in Shillong," said Helen.

Their stall 'Lungisani Doingz Craft' has become the centre of attraction as it offers an exquisite array of traditional and artificial jewellery from South Africa.

The Thailand Pavilion with 20 most reputed companies is another major attraction at the fair. The National Jute Board pavilion with more than 15 entrepreneurs from across the country is also a big draw.

Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Nepal are displaying and selling exquisite products, including jewellery, household goods, handicraft, onyx and many other products.

The shopping carnival is an initiative of the Industries and Trade Fair Association of Assam (ITFAA) with support of National Jute Board, Union ministry of textiles and Meghalaya government. The organizers have made the carnival a perfect platform to usher in the festive season in the Pine City with some breathtaking Christmas decorations.
