CMJ University in Shillong had reportedly “sold” over 400 fake Ph.D degrees and registered an equal number in the past one year. Governor M.S. Mooshahary, in his capacity as Visitor, had lodged a complaint against the university following which three senior persons were arrested by the police.
Chancellor missing
However, founder and self-appointed Chancellor Chandra Mohan Jha (after whom the institution is named), is missing.
A statement issued by the UGC said the committee would inquire into issues in their entirety.
“Students and the general public are hereby informed that His Excellency the Governor of Meghalaya, in his capacity as Visitor, has initiated certain actions against CMJ University [private university], Shillong [Meghalaya] for irregularities committed by it,” the statement said.
During his visit to Meghalaya last week, Human Resource Development Minister M.M. Pallam Raju said: “As things stand, all that the UGC can do is list it [CMJ University] on its website, stating that this is a university of disrepute and has been giving fraudulent degrees.”
