Mukul Sangma holds meeting with Union Home Secy

Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma today held a one-to-one meeting with Union Home Secretary (designate) Anil Goswami here on various issues pertaining to the security in the state.

Goswami, who was on a two-day visit to the state, also met the Governor R S Mooshahary besides meeting the Director General of Assam Riffles, Lt Gen Ranbir Singh.

Among the other key issues discussed were deployment of additional six companies of paramilitary forces in five militancy-hit Garo Hill districts, official sources said.

"He (Chief Minister) gave me a perspective of the state government's assessment about issues confronting the state," Goswami said after the meeting.

Asked to comment on the claim of Maoist leaders that they are setting up bases along the inter-state boundary with Assam, Goswami parried a direct reply.

Earlier in the day, during his meeting with the DG Assam Rifles, he was briefed on the security situation in the North East with particular reference to management of Indo-Myanmar border.

Goswami lauded the efforts of Assam Rifles to deal with insurgency and provide basic amenities to people staying in the remote and isolated areas of North East states, an Assam Rifles release said.
