Meghalaya varsity director surrenders

Even as the Meghalaya Police CID are unable to locate Chandra Mohan Jha, the self-appointed chancellor of CMJ University, Manjeet Kaur, the varsity's director, has surrendered in a court in Shillong.

Sources in Shillong said Kaur, who was absconding since the police registered a case against the varsity, surrendered in the court of the chief judicial magistrate of East Khasi Hills district on Monday. She was remanded in 14-day judicial custody.

Kaur is the fourth official of the university to be arrested since Governor R S Mooshahary, in his capacity as the Visitor of the university, lodged an FIR against it on April 30. The other three are registrar Mrinal Kanti Deb, deputy registrar Premlal Rai and HR manager Juban Kharpuri. The university had, among other alleged acts of fraud, awarded 434 PhD degrees in one academic year.
