Meghalaya DTO office fire destroys documents

SHILLONG, Feb 26 – A major portion of the District Transport Office (DTO), together with important documents and cash, was gutted in an inferno that broke out in the wee hours here today.

According to police, the fire broke out at 1 am and the rooms where the DTO kept important documents and cash in the strong room were gutted before the fire tenders could douse the inferno. The office is located at Lower Lauchmiere here.

The police have begun its investigation into the case and haven’t ruled out foul play. The guard, B Shah was absent from office when the fire broke out and he reached only after the flame was doused by the fire tenders. The DTO, C Lyngdoh was questioned by the police.

PTI Adds: The fire broke out in the third Secretariat building here today, official sources said.

The fire destroyed at least three rooms including a strong room of the District Transport Office here containing cash and tax records, the sources said.

Several important records of the Megahalaya Transport department were also feared destroyed in the fire, they said.

Police have sought help from the Forensic department to investigate into how the fire broke out in the highly secure concrete building even as they have not ruled out foul play at the moment.

The third Secretariat also houses other important government offices like Electricity Commission and Information Commission.
