“We will be working out on a river embankment project to safeguard the Umkhrah,” Ampareen told reporters today.
Recently, water resources minister A.L. Hek said the government was contemplating a masterplan to tackle flood problems faced by the localities situated close to the river during the monsoon.
Ampareen said enforcement officers from the development authority would be directed to check any kind of encroachment along the Umkhrah.
The river has also turned into a garbage dump. “We will check that there will be no further disposal of wastes in the Umkhrah,” she said.
The minister said the department, along with other department, would ensure strict implementation of the Meghalaya Protection of Catchment Areas Act, 1990, to safeguard the Umkhrah.
She also said re-survey of land in and around the river would be undertaken to ensure that no lapses take place in the future.
