120 JNNURM buses lying idle in Meghalaya

Shillong, Jun 27 : Altogether 120 buses sanctioned under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewable Mission (JNNURM) in Meghalaya, are lying unused in the Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) premises.

Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) official said the Centre under the mission had sanctioned 120 buses which are lying parked in the premises of the Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) here since February this year.

Many parts of these new buses had been missing or damaged even before launching its services in the state, (MTC) official said.

The government is yet to come out with a concrete decision although earlier there was a proposal that MTC should operate the buses but the matter has not yet been finalised, sources said.

While the Assam Government had already launched the services of the JNNURM buses in December 2010, the Meghalaya Government was yet to launch its services, official sources said here today.

The sources said that though the MTC had made its presentation before the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), a committee was set up to examine the operation of the buses. However, till date no decision was taken whether MTC would operate the buses.

Earlier in April, the SPV had sought further clarification from the MTC on the proposed operation of the buses to ensure that they do not incur any loss to the cash-strapped corporation once they are operated.

The state government is citing reasons for not launching the services of the buses as minute details about the project is yet to be cleared by the Cabinet.

The delay in implementation of the project has led to the outcry of commuters who are irked by the arbitary services provided by the local taxis plying in the Shillong city.
