Prohibitory orders along Meghalaya border

Shillong, Apr 2 (PTI) Prohibitory orders have been promulgated along Meghalaya''s border with Assam in view of the Assembly polls in the neighbouring state.

Orders under Section 144 CrPC have been clamped prohibiting carrying of arms and weapons by members of the public within an area of 5 km from the state boundary with Assam, official sources said here today.

Elections in Assam are slated for April 4 and 11.

The order would remain in force until further orders, it said.

Certain pockets along the disputed Assam-Meghalaya boundary are known for frequent tension.

Altogether 12 people were killed, some 50,000 people were displaced and over 2,000 houses torched in the 9-day ethnic riots in January in Meghalayas East Garo Hills and Assams Goalpara districts.
