Anti-Mukul camp swells, Lapang bound for Delhi

Unhappy at Mukul Sangma's 'autocratic way of functioning', the rebel MLAs had claimed that the majority were in favour of a change of leadership and "we want to see this change soon".

Two days ago, AICC observers Dhaniram Shandil and Sanjay Bapna, who were on a visit here, had dismissed the question of change of the Congress Legislator Party leader in Meghalaya and had said the rumblings in the state unit were "trivial matters that could be sorted out within the party".

On Monday, the dissident MLAs had met Shandil and Bapna and had pressed for their demand, citing their grievances. The move to oust Mukul Sangma has been going on for a few weeks, but no positive response has come from the AICC so far.Sangma took over the reins after four-time chief minister Lapang, who could not complete a full five year term even once, was forced to quit after a revolt in his party last year.

Sangma's government is the 22nd government the state has seen in its 38-year history which has been marked by frequent political turbulence. The Congress has 28 MLAs in the ruling coalition with 12 from regional parties and 4 Independents.
