Anna Hazare's campaign in Shillong draws huge support

Shillong, Apr 8 : The indefinite fast of social activist Anna Hazare which entered fourth day today, is drawing huge support of people from different walks of life in Meghalaya.

The Meghalaya Right to Information Movement (MRTIM) members will stage a sit-in-demonstration tomorrow in solidarity with the movement spearheaded by Mr Hazare to push forward the anti-corruption-Jan-Lokpal Bill in consultation with the civil society.

"We are in support of Mr Hazare’s movement and appeal to all cross-section of people in the state to extend their support for the introduction of this Bill," MRTIM leader Michael N Syiem told UNI here.

In support of Mr Hazare's demand, United Democratic Party (UDP) legislator Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit said a similar public response was required in Meghalaya to wage a war against corruption.

"With corruption becoming an integral part of our system, it is high time to tackle the malpractice," Mr Basaiawmoit, who has spearheading the 'clean election campaign', said.

He said corrupt politicians and bureaucrats should not have immunity from legal prosecution.

"I am happy with such a strong public outrage against corruption. It has shown that the people have woken up to the fact that there is need to clean up the political system and ensure responsible governance," Mr Basaiawmoit said.

The teachers and students of the North Eastern Hill University, meanwhile, also extended their support to Hazare’s anti-corruption campaign.
