Meghalaya watch on Assam border

SHILLONG: The state government has been closely monitoring the situation along the inter-state border with Assam following ethnic conflicts in December.

"The situation along the Assam-Meghalaya boundary is being monitored closely and the institutional mechanism at the level of chief ministers and chief secretaries of the two states is striving to resolve inter-state issues," said governor Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary on the first day of the budget session here on Thursday.

The committee of chief secretaries is in the process of finalizing the recommendations to be made to the chief ministers, the governor told the house. Observing that law and order in the state has been generally stable and peaceful to a "large extent", the governor, however, rued the "exception" of the "unfortunate ethnic clashes" in East Garo Hills resulting in loss of life, damage to property and displacement of a large number of people.

"Taking immediate steps to provide shelter and other essential commodities in relief camps, the state government also sanctioned Rs 2.75 crore for extending relief to the affected households and ex gratia to the next of the kin of those who had lost their lives," said Mooshahary. He added that the situation in the affected areas is more or less normal now.

The governor stated that activities of various rebel outfits in the state were being monitored and kept under close watch. "The government will take all steps to ensure such groups are neutralized," he said.
