Meghalaya Home Minister condemns militant attack on officer

Shillong, Mar 22: Meghalaya Home Minister H D R Lyngdoh today condemned the attack orchestrated by Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants on a police convoy escorting Resubelpara Civil Sub Divisional Officer Ram Singh in East Garo Hills.

Mr Singh, probing the alleged fake encounter of a villager, Washington Marak at Rongrekgre village in state's East Garo Hills, made a miraculous escape yesterday when GNLA militants opened fire on his convoy, while he was proceeding to the village for spot enquiry into the fake encounter.
On January 26, Washington N Marak was allegedly killed in a 'fake encounter' at Rongrekgre village near Williamnagar, the district headquarters of East Garo Hills district. Police claimed that Marak was a member of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), a nascent militant group operating in Garo Hills.

''If there are any grievances on the encounter, the militants can lodge complaints or file affidavits to the magistrate instead of resorting to violence,'' Mr Lyngdoh told reporters.

He said the government has directed the police to take all precautionary measures to see that the officers posted in Garo Hills are protected.
