Meghalaya govt approves tourism code

According to an IANS report, in a bid to ensure that Meghalaya remains a safe tourist destination, the Cabinet yesterday approved a voluntary code of conduct for all stakeholders. The code seeks to provide guidelines so that tourists don't get exploited.

M. Ampareen Lyngdoh, Tourism Minister, Meghalaya said that in the last one year, Meghalaya attracted over five lakh international and domestic tourists. “Our aim is to ensure that tourism in the state follows globally acceptable standards of safe tourism practices, applicable for both tourists and the local populace,” added Lyngdoh.

The code is also meant to enhance prevention of activities like forced or involuntary drugs use, manipulated and incorrect information, and cultural and social intolerance which could lead to crime.
