Demand for power to shoot up in 2012

SHILLONG: With complete electrification of villages and increasing power need of both industrial and household consumers, the demand for power in Meghalaya in 2012 is expected to go up to around 800 MW.

The expected rise in demand for power is against the state's installed ca-pacity of 187 MW and central sector share of power of around 200 MW. Informing this, while presenting Rs 419 crore deficit budget in the assembly on Monday. Chief minister Mukul Sangma, however, said with commissioning of the Myntdu-Leshka and New Umtru Hydro Electric Projects, the state's power generation would increase by 166 MW and to-tal to 353 MW. "Our share of power from central PSU projects in the region is expected to go up to 560 MW by 2014," he said.
