Constable-turned-rebel dismissed from service

SHILLONG: Savio Marak, a constable of Meghalaya Police who fled along with 2 INSAS assault rifles and sixty rounds of ammunition to join the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) on January 21, has been dismissed from service.

"As no inquiry is possible, he has been summarily dismissed from service," an official said. Marak deserted his colleagues deployed in the ethnic violence-hit Mendipathar area of East Garo Hills district last month.

One of the rifles taken by Narak was later found in the possession of a villager, Putin Marak, at Thaba Danengeni in the same district. Putin, from whom police also found 17 rounds of ammunition and a magazine, was also arrested.

Marak had earlier confirmed that he had joined the GNLA, a nascent rebel group floated by Champion Sangma, a former DSP of Meghalaya Police, who, too, was subsequently dismissed from service. The group, having links with bigger outfits like Ulfa and NDFB, is blamed for rampant extortion and kidnappings in the Garo Hills.
