Meghalaya's most wanted car lifter caught in Assam

Shillong, Sep 2 (PTI) Meghalaya's most wanted car lifter, involved in over 1,000 cases, has been arrested by Assam Police from Silchar. Ajay Chauhan and his accomplice Mrinal Lashkar were caught yesterday from a hotel in Silchar, Cachar SP Prashanta Bhuyan said over phone.

The duo was today brought to Shillong for interrogation. Chauhan, police said, hailed from Shillong while Mrinal hailed from Nagaon in Assam. They were said be involved in nearly 1,000 cases and Chauhan was one of the "most wanted" criminal in the state.

District police were questioning the duo at Sadar Police Station even as top police officials refused to divulge details.

In another development, eighteen year old IA Kumzuk, hailing from Changki in Mokokchung district of Nagaland was arrested in Shillong by Meghalaya police after he stole a vehicle from a locality here, police said.

The vehicle was recovered by police. The car lifters, police said, were involved in a number of cases of car lifting in the region as well as outside.
