Meghalaya govt invites bids for water supply scheme

Shillong, Aug 10 : In order to meet the requirement of drinking water in greater Shillong, the Meghalaya government has invited bids for the second package of Stage-III of the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS).

Top government officials said here today that execution of the project aimed at generating drinking water for the people in and around Shillong city up to 24 million litres per day will be commenced very soon.

The finalisation of the bid applications has been fixed on August 28 in which selected firms will have to undertake works under package-II mainly the distribution system, the official said.

The official informed that the works under package-I of the project is under progress by a Kolkata-based firm, Tantia Construction Ltd, which includes construction of raw water pumping, treatment plant, intake well, laying of clear water gravity feeder, construction of zonal reservoirs besides others.

The Meghalaya government had in September 2009, awarded the contract for Stage-III of the GSWSS to Tantia Construction Ltd at a cost of Rs 51.40 crore.

''After the completion of Stage-III project, it would generate 24 million litres per day and provide up to 135 litres per head per day of drinking water for about 5,12,000 population, the official said, adding at present the Stage-I and II of the scheme generates only 85 litres per head per day of drinking water in the city.

The implementation of the Stage-III of the scheme under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission was delayed for more than 16 months after it was inaugurated by President Ptratibha Patil on October 22, 2008 due to the tussle between Public health Engineering Department and Meghalaya Urban Development Authority.
