Prohibitory order to check overloading of coal trucks

Shillong, Jul 21 : Prohibitory orders have been clamped in Meghalaya's East Garo Hills district to check the overloading of coal-laden trucks, plying along the National Highway-62 in the state.

East Garo Hills district, Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi said the order imposed under Section 144 CrPC was to curb the unrestrained, illegal and unacceptable overloading of coal laden trucks way over the prescribed limit of 15 metric tonnes, thereby badly damaging roads and playing into the hands of the illegal extortionists.

The prohibitory orders is significant following the Assam government had to face contempt of Supreme Court order that mandates that the excess load from coal laden trucks has to be offloaded at detection point at the point of entry into Meghalaya.

The Assam government has also requested that the excess load should be offloaded at detection and the truckers fined under Section 194 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

Mr Bakshi said majority of these trucks does not even have valid permits issued by the District Transport Officer for the road movement making their movement illegal and unlawful.

''For excess load of coal , it has to be offloaded at the point of detection and the violators have to pay penalty of Rs 2000 under Section 194 of Motor Vehicles Act, 1998 and additional Rs 1000 for each excess tonne of coal as also the labour charges for offloading,'' he added.
