Meghalaya Cong to elect district chiefs on July 14, 15

Shillong, July 5 : The Meghalaya PCC is gearing up for the election to the post of party president scheduled for July 24.

The working president of Meghalaya PCC, Deborah Marak, said the party had already completed elections to the block presidents of the Congress.

While the elections to the president of the party will be held on July 24, that of the district presidents will be held on July 14 and 15, Marak said.

The Congress insiders said in the backdrop of the change in leadership from D.D. Lapang to Mukul Sangma in April this year, there are chances that both the leaders may field their own favourite candidates for the post of the president.

Both the leaders are looking to the 2013 Assembly elections when the party president, supported by them, can help in the selection of the candidates.

As of now it appears that there may not be any consensus for the post of the party president, a Congress source said.

The present party president, Friday Lyngdoh, who is close to former chief minister D.D. Lapang, is likely to contest for the post of president this time.

Lyngdoh was appointed party president in the end of 2008 prior to the Lok Sabha elections, replacing Congress leader O.L. Nongtdu. He had served for a period of two years.

However, Deborah Marak denied any differences within the party over the elections to the party president.

She said she was yet to decide on whether to contest the election to the post of the president.

At the same time, she wanted the party leaders and legislators to extend support to chief minister Mukul Sangma so that there was stability and development.

On April 20, Sangma took over as chief minister after ousting Lapang from power.

As Sangma has completed only two months in office, Marak urged the legislators to support him so that he can complete the remaining term.

She said frequent change in leadership would definitely affect the development of the state and it was high time that the present leadership was given enough time to perform.

“Let the chief minister continue without any disruption from any quarters so that the state can reap the fruits of development,” Marak said.
