Jailbreak plot thickens

The Shillong jail

Shillong, Jun 1: A year after the Shillong jailbreak, the delay in the jail upgrade and an incomplete inquiry confront the Congress-led Meghalaya United Alliance government.
Last year on May 31 morning, seven undertrials led by Full Moon Dhar escaped from Shillong Jail.
The director-general (prisons), Kulbir Krishan, today said installation of CCTVs and metal detectors in Shillong Jail is taking time, though a tender was floated in March this year.
The earlier practice of carrying firewood inside the jail premises to cook food had been scrapped as it helped in plotting the jailbreak, Krishan said, adding that LPG is now used for cooking purpose.
Krishan said after the May 31 incident, there was no report of any major jailbreak except an attempt at Tura Jail.
The state government in October constituted a judicial inquiry headed by retired judge D. Biswas. Justice (retd) Biswas, however, could not complete the probe as he had to go to Assam on a different assignment on April 20. With the inquiry commission in limbo, the convenor of the Steering Committee against Murder of Democracy, Agnes Kharshiing, today released to the media her affidavit before the commission on the alleged involvement of the higher-ups in the jailbreak.
According to it, “the extermination of Dhar was necessary to wipe out the evidences leading to connection of the persons at the helm of affairs, with the incident”. “There is no explanation anywhere as to how the two mobile phones of the victim (numbers 9615327079 and 9615514675) …went missing,” Kharshiing said.
She said Evatiplang Kharkongor, the girlfriend of Dhar, received an SMS from the second mobile used by Dhar on May 16, a fortnight before the jailbreak.
The text message reads: “Boss plz confirm fast our side fully ready so it is very important 4 u n our friend 2 prepare nicely 4 success arrange well d rest.”
The day after, she received another SMS from Dhar’s other mobile phone. It reads: “Boss, yes we know of problem, it’s up to you to Command whatever we will do or not. Remember one thing planning without fighting will not success any more. Remine your own words talk less work more to prove that you are a soldier no talk no fear just d and be victory as else no chance without your risk. Think twice and thrice all we need and love you. Every one angry coz we really need u. Sorry for a bad and dirty words but speak the truth, no cheating no reasons. Just a word do or die.
Kharshiing wants the authorities to find out to whom the SMS was meant, though Dhar’s girlfriend was just a courier to pass the SMS to the “Boss” as mentioned in the text.
