| Shillong, May 24: Two girls from Tura climbed to the top of the merit lists in secondary and higher secondary examinations in Meghalaya today, proving yet again that geographical remoteness has little to do with academic brilliance. The results of the secondary and higher secondary (Arts) were declared by the Meghalaya Board of School Education today. While Shresta Saha of Aeroville Secondary School stood first in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate examinations, Cherian Kamchi T. Sangma of Don Bosco College got the top position in Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (Arts). Don Bosco, Tura, also produced the second rank holder, Johnliness Pariong, in HSSLC (Arts) examination. Two students of St Peter’s School, Shillong, Abhishek Buragohain and Gaurav Ghosh, bagged the second and third positions in the SSLC. Buragohain and Ghosh of St Peters said dedication, honesty and perseverance were the mantra of their success. While Buragohain wants to pursue engineering, Ghosh wishes to study medicine. The pass percentage for SSLC examinations this year is 45.05, one per cent less than last year’s figure. The pass percentage of HSSLC, however, is 51.77. In the SSLC results, while East Khasi Hills district secured the highest pass percentage (43 per cent) the West Garo Hills registered 17 per cent, Jaintia Hills 13 per cent and West Khasi Hills 12 per cent. In East Garo Hills and Ri Bhoi, the pass percentage is six. Though Tura Aeroville School secured the top rank in SSLC, the remaining positions in the state were shared by Shillong schools and a school in Jowai, Jaintia Hills. Of the top 10 positions, St Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong, secured four positions while St Margaret’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong, St Peter’s School, Shillong and KJP Girls Higher Secondary School, Shillong secured two positions each. The KJP Synod Mihngi HS School, Jowai, St Anthony’s HS School, Shillong, Laban Bengalee Boys HS School, St Nanak Secondary School, Shillong and Eribin Presbyterian Secondary School, Shillong also secured a position each. |
