NGOs to seek ''explanation'' from Justice Biswas

Shillong | Tuesday, Apr 27 The Steering Committee Against Murder of Democracy has decided to seek an ''explanation'' from the Meghalaya government on Justice (Retd) D Biswas's giving up suddenly his probe into the infamous Shillong jailbreak.

The previous D D Lapang-led ministry had ordered for a judicial judicial enquiry into the May 31 jailbreak with Justice Biswas heading the probe.

''We are surprised with Justice Biswas leaving the commission of inquiry halfway, especially, when the probe was going on smoothly.

There was only a few sittings left before the commission could have submitted its findings to the government,'' Khasi Student's Union General Secretary Hamletson Dohling said.

The influtential KSU is a constituents of SCAMOD, an umbrella organistion of 14 NGOs here in Meghalaya.

On April 10, Justice Biswas resigned as the head of the commission of enquiry after the Assam government appointed him as the chairman of Lok Aayog. The Commission was scheduled to submit its findings to the government by May 31.

''Justice Biswas should repay all the money that he got as the judge of the jailbreak inquiry commission,'' Mr Dohling said.
