Meghalaya to Host Northeast Games 2010

ShillongMeghalaya will host the 24th edition of the North East Games 2010, scheduled to be held from April 19 to 24.

All the eight states of the North East, including Sikkim, have confirmed their participation in the week-long biggest sports meet in the region.

''We are proud to play host for the North East Games and preparation for it is in full swing,'' Director Sports and Youth Affairs Matsiewdor War Nongbri told UNI.

Meghalaya hosted this event in 1994.

She said total expenditure for hosting the games is estimated at Rs 1,67,35,000 out of which Rs 55,90,000 would be borne by Sports Authority of India.

The event will comprise ten disciplines and 114 events.

Altogether 1464 sportspersons will be vying for 150 gold medals in the various events during the six-day long Games.

The Games will include Athletics, Archery, Basketball, Badminton, Boxing, Football, Table tennis, Judo, Wushu and Karate.

SAI's contribution to the games coffer is in the form of medals, trophies, certificates and other expenditure during the week-long games, Ms Nongbri said.
