Lafarge aid to storm-hit villagers in Meghalaya

Shillong, Apr 22 (PTI) Lafarge Umiam Mining Pvt Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lafarge Surma Cement Ltd, Bangladesh has provided an aid of Rs 5 lakh for the rehabilitation work at storm-hit Shella village in Meghalaya where the cement company has its mining plant.

The cheque was delivered to the village council by Mike Cowell, Managing Director of Lafarge Surma Cement.

A storm, which hit Shella last week, destroyed more than 100 houses at the village. Strong winds and rains uprooted trees along the roads and flattened houses besides damaging the areca nut and other plantations.

The amount provided by LUMPL will be used to provide relief to the affected, rebuilding their dwellings as well as to support the repair effort, an official communique from the company said.
