Meghalaya parties seek border vigil

Shillong, March 2 : The Opposition parties in Meghalaya — the NCP and BJP — have asked the state government to provide safety and security to the border residents in the aftermath of the fresh firing at Muktapur by troops of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) yesterday.

In a statement issued here, the Border Security Force (BSF) said that the BDR troops had fired one round in the air yesterday while some people were involved in fishing at 2.25pm in the Muktapur area of Meghalaya along the Bangladesh border.

The BDR move from across the border forced the BSF troops to retaliate and subsequently a few more rounds of fire were exchanged between the two forces, the statement said.

However, no casualty was reported, the paramilitary force said. A flag meeting was held at Muktapur and the situation was stated to be normal, according to the BSF.

The NCP told a press conference today that a fact-finding team, led by the Opposition leader Conrad Sangma, along with party leaders from the Jaintia Hills would visit Muktapur tomorrow and submit a report on the incident to the government.

Sangma said there were reports that neither the deputy commissioner of Jaintia Hills, T. Dkhar, nor any minister had visited the affected area.

The BJP state organising secretary Dipayan Chakraborty said the party wanted the central government to take up the matter with the government of Bangladesh so that the situation remained in control.
