Shillong, Mar 8 (PTI) Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister B M Lanong's controversial remarks calling women activists "vipers" has evoked vociferous protests from women's organisations who boycotted functions to mark the International Women's Day today.

"Some women have the habit of biting like vipers", Lanong had said while referring to two women activists.

Protesting under the banner of Civil Society Women Organisation (CSWO), the women took out a protest rally and a signature campaign here in front of the Additional Secretariat.

"Women are no vipers in the society", "We condemn irresponsible statements against women" and "Have the women of Meghalaya got all their rights ?", read banners carried by the protestors.

Social activist Patricia Mukhim said the signature campaign was organised to make the authorities aware that the women in the state have been wrongly portrayed.
