Lapang seeks increase of cabinet size

Shillong, Mar 6 (PTI) Meghalaya Chief Minister D D Lapang has pitched for amending the Constitution to allow smaller states like Meghalaya to increase the size of the cabinet for their governments' stability.

"It would be appropriate that the size of council of ministers be increased by necessary amendment to the Constitutional provision," Lapang said after meeting Congress chief Sonia Gandhi last evening.

He said for a small state like Meghalaya, running coalition governments for the past three decades with only sixty legislators, it had become difficult to accommodate the aspirations of various coalition partners in a small cabinet.

The incapability often resulted in political instability of the state, he said.

The appeal followed strong criticism of Lapang for elevating three MLAs of the ruling coalition to the rank and status of chief minister recently.
