New BSF border outposts, additional battalions in the offing

Shillong , June 7 : The Union home ministry has sanctioned Rs 8,000 crore to raise additional battalions, border outposts (BOP) and other assets to be located mostly in the Northeast, BSF Director-General, M L Kumawat, said today.

In all, 509 new BOPs would be raised in the country of which 383 alone would be located in the Northeast. The Assam sector would have six new BOPs and Meghalaya 17, Kumawat said during a visit to the Assam- Meghalaya Frontier headquarters here.

Another 29 new battalions, nine DIG offices and three new frontiers headquarters would be raised within the next four years, he said, addressing the media.

As the western sector now is relatively well fenced, most of the new BOPs and offices would be located in the Northeast, the DG said.

The distance between two BOPs would be reduced ideally by up to 3.5 kms, he said, adding, the fencing work on the Indo-Bangladesh border would be expedited and completed within the next four years.
