NCP lawmakers stage walkout in Meghalaya Assembly

Shillong, The Opposition NCP today staged a walkout from the Meghalaya Assembly protesting against Speaker Charles Pyngrope’s decision not to allow them to move an adjournment motion to discuss a recent jailbreak allegedly involving a Congress leader.

As soon as the House resumed business, NCP legislator James K Sangma raised a point of order and asked the Speaker to allow him to move the adjournment motion “since it is an important issue”.

Mr Pyngrope, however, refused stating that the matter was scheduled to come up in another motion.

Leader of Opposition Conrad K Sangma (NCP) said as the matter was of utmost importance it should be discussed today.

Echoing his plea, party colleagues Adolf Lu Hitler, R Marak, E C Bamon and Purno A Sangma insisted on the Speaker allowing the adjournment motion to be discussed.

”The adjournment motion concerns the whole House and it is different from a private member’s motion. The adjournment motion is the second most important one in the House which should not be delayed,” Mr Purno Sangma maintained.

Refusing to comply to the Opposition’s plea, Mr Pyngrope insisted that the matter would be clubbed together in a private member’s motion.

Deputy Chief Minister Mukul M Sangma said since the private member’s motion had been listed during the current session it could not be taken now.

As the Speaker refused to admit the adjournment motion all the 14 NCP legislators staged a walkout.

”It is better to walkout of the House after the Speaker rejected the adjournment motion,” Mr Conrad Sangma said, alleging that the government was hiding the truth relating to the jail break.

”We want the government to hand over the case to the CBI and at the same time Chief Minister DD La[angshould relinquish the Home department, while incumbent DGP Anil Pradhan should also be removed to facilitate an impartial probe,” he told reporters.

Mr Purno Sangma said there should be a thorough discussion on the matter ”and we will raise several points regarding the jailbreak issue in the coming days in the Assembly”.
