Meghalaya govt to reopen Shillong jailbreak case

Shillong, June 14 : Bowing to pressure from social organisations against the release of a Congress leader, who was allegedly involved in the Shillong jailbreak incident, Meghalaya government on Friday agreed to reopen the case.

After a meeting with Chief Minister D D Lapang, Khasi Students Union president Samuel Jyrwa told reporters here that the state government had agreed to re-investigate the entire jailbreak episode.

On May 31, a hardcore criminal, Fullmoon Dhar, and six other undertrials escaped from the Shillong District Jail.

A Congress leader Thomas Nongtdu, also a member of the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), was arrested for allegedly abetting the jailbreak, but was unconditionally released a day later under controversial circumstances.
