‘Megha’, clouds, and ‘Aalaya’, Home, forms the name Megahlaya. The Meghalaya sky is always covered by clouds, truly giving it the name of Meghalaya. It is a state of Northern-Eastern India. It became a full-fledged State on January 21, 1972. The State is divided into seven administrative districts. The capital city, Shillong, is situated at an altitude of 1,496 meters above sea level.
