Meghalaya Speaker says efforts made to influence him

Shillong , Mar 16: Meghalaya Speaker B M Lanong, who issued show-cause notices to two independents for pulling out from the ruling Meghalaya Progressive Alliance government reducing it to a minority, today complained that efforts were made to influence him not to take action.

He complained to the assembly privilege committee that former legislator H S Shylla has tried to influence him not to take action against the two independents, Ismail R Marak and Limison D Sangma, who had gone over to the Opposition camp on Monday.

Lanong said in the show-causes issued last night that the independents have been asked why action should not be taken against them under the Anti-Defection Law and given them three days time to reply.

Later in the day, Lanong said that he had only told the media earlier that according to the 10th Schedule of the Anti-Defection Law there were provisions for action against independents for defection.

"But I have never expressed my opinion to disqualify the two independents," Lanong said.

The Congress, meanwhile, decided to move a resolution in the House against Lanong going to the media with a"pre-determined mind"to disqualify the two independents.
