Congress stakes claim to form government in Meghalaya

Shillong , Mar 31: A day after the NCP-led Meghalaya Progressive Alliance claimed majority, Congress today made a similar claim, asking Governor RS Mooshahary to invite it to form the government.

Opposition leader DD Lapang this evening faxed a list of 31 MLAs to Raj Bhavan, which he claimed was with the Congress-led Meghalaya United Alliance. The list included four of the rebel MLAs, barring HSPDP MLA Advisor Pariong who has returned back to the MPA fold.

Congress undoubtedly has the majority in the 60-member state assembly and it should be invited to form government, Lapang was quoted by Congress sources as saying in the letter. However, there was no word from Raj Bhavan.

Stating that he would meet the Governor tomorrow, Lapang said that the Gauhati High Court had stayed the suspension of the five MLAs and the apex court"endorsed"the ruling. He also demanded resignation of Speaker BM Lanong on moral grounds for acting in a partial manner.

Yesterday, the NCP-led Meghalaya Progressive Alliance in a representation to the Governor demanded that it be invited to form the government because it had proved its majority on the floor of the Assembly on the March 17 trust vote.
