Centre tapped to stem influx

Shillong, March 17 : Meghalaya Governor R.S. Mooshahary today said the state had sought assistance from Delhi to check infiltration of illegal migrants from across the international and inter-state borders.
Addressing the opening day of the budget session of the Assembly today, the governor said assistance had been sought from the Centre to initiate measures to check the influx of illegal migrants to the state.
The governor said the construction of border fencing needs to be expedited along the international border to check influx and improve security in the border areas, as an immediate measure.
“This matter would be pursued proactively keeping the best interest of the people and the state,” he said.
The state government had earlier urged the Centre to provide multipurpose identity cards in the state to check the entry of illegal migrants.
Mooshahary also stressed the need to improve the internal security in the context of the serial blasts in Assam and the terror attacks in Mumbai recently.
“The state government has decided to strengthen the security set-up by introducing new technology, better training facilities, modern equipment and specialised manpower,” he said.
He said steps had also been taken to prevent the misuse of arms and explosives, which could disrupt peace in the state.
The governor said police had been able to curb militant activities in the state over the years and that 238 militants belonging to different groups had returned to the mainstream.
Mooshahary said measures have also been taken to prevent crimes against women in the state.
The governor said separate women police stations would be set up in all the seven districts of the state not only to look after the investigation of cases of crimes against women, but also to deal with matters related to crimes against children.
Regarding the border dispute with Assam, Mooshahary said several official-level meetings were held to solve the boundary problem with the neighbouring state.
